The Eland-90 was the standard armoured car of the SA Army's armoured car regiments and the reconnaissance troops of the tank regiment. Developed from the Panhard AML-90 by stages since the early 1960s, with various improvements having been incorporated into each successive batch. It has a two-seater turret with a 90mm low-velocity gun and 7.62 machine-gun coaxially mounted. Crewed by three men, the commander, gunner, and driver, Its armour only protects against small-arms fire and shrapnel. Weighing 6 tons when combat-loaded, it can achieve a road speed of 90 km/h and has a road range of 450 kms. Originally designed as a light patrol vehicle, the Eland has been used as a conventional reconnaissance vehicle, as a tank hunter and as an assault gun. The Eland armoured cars were nicknamed 'Noddy Cars' by the South African soldiers.
