3 Reconnaissance Commando (Ex Rhodesian Selous Scouts)*

Find Another UnitBrief Description
3 Reconnaissance Commando (Ex Rhodesian Selous Scouts)* - (0 members)

3 Reconnaissance Commando (3 RC) [Afr: 3 Verkennings-kommando (3 VK)] was established on 1 May 1976. The unit was not immediately activated but used as a paper unit to administer Small Teams operations. During April 1980, approximately 80 former Selous Scouts were flown in from Rhodesia to Phalaborwa, bringing their regimental standard, records, maps, etc. with them. The inactive 3 Reconnaissance Commando was activated to accommodate them. On 1 January 1981, 5 Reconnaissance Commando was disbanded and 5 Reconnaissance Regiment established, consisting of members of 5 RC and 3 RC. No unit badge for 3 RC was ever developed or worn. Initially this group wanted to be known as 7 Reconnaissance Commando, but due to insufficient numbers and because 3 RC was dormant, it was decided that it would be designated 3 Reconnaissance Commando. (*3 RC did not have its own emblem but members identified with the emblem of the Selous Scouts)
