The South African Medical Service (SAMS) [Afr: Suid-Afrikaanse Geneeskundige Diens (SAGD)] was a multi-disciplinary organisation with the primary mission of providing comprehensive medical care for all members of the South African Defence Force. Originally just a corps of the SA Army, the South African Medical Corps (SAMC) was upgraded to a service with the same status of the three combat services, the SA Army, the SA Air Force and the SA Navy, on 1 July 1979. It remained the SAMS until 1994 whereafter it was reincorporated into the new South African National Defence Force (SANDF) as the South African Military Health Service (SAMHS).
