Cape Town Rifles - (3 members)

The Cape Town Rifles "Duke's" were raised in Cape Town as the Cape Rifle Corps on 28 Nov 1855, making it the oldest Cape infantry unit. The name changed to the Cape Town Rifles in 1857. In 1876, the Cape Town Rifles became the Duke of Edinburgh's Own Volunteer Rifles, known as The Dukes. It served in almost every campaign since the 9th Frontier War (1877-78). The current name was forced on the unit in 1961 as part of the new SADF.

DUKE OF EDINBURGH'S OWN RIFLES

The oldest unit in the Cape Command the Duke of Edinburgh's own Rifles was formed in 1855 at the request of Sir George Grey, Governor of the Cape of Good Hope. Known up to 1867 as the Capetown Rifles, in that year the name was changed at the special request of H.R.H. Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh. In 1857 the Regiment performed garrison duty at the Cape relieving Imperial troops sent to India during the Indian Mutiny. The Regiment saw active service during the Native Wars, 1877 (Gaika Galeka); 1879 (Transkei); 1880-1881 (Basutoland); 1897 (Bechuanaland) and during the Boer War, 1899-1902. During the World War, 1914-1918 it served in South West Africa and provided a company for the 1st Regiment, South Africa Brigade which saw service in Egypt and Flanders. ...

Hi Johan, sorry I could not load the Old Regiment badge of the 'Duke of Edinburgh's own Rifles' at the same time I loaded the Bio on the Regiment, some computer errors. ...
