History

RE: 1 Military Area

Up to 14 November 1975, Operation Savannah had up to that stage been operationally conducted under 1 Military Area. From 15 November 1975, 2 and 3 Military Areas were added, while 1 Military Area, as before, comprised of the Owambo-Kavango-Caprivi areas until 6 January 1976. From 7 January 1976, the northern border of 1 Military Area was moved northwards to coincide with the railway line from Moçamedes (Namibe) to Serpa Pinto (Menongue) and from there on in a straight line to the Zambian border. The area to the south of this line was then further divided in a western and eastern area with the dividing line running from Artur de Paiva southward (approximately following the 17º Longitude) down to South West Africa, as far down as the southern border of the former 1 Military Area. The area to the east of this line then became 1 Military Area and the area to the west became 3 Military Area. The former 2 Military Area which stretched north of the mentioned railway line, thus became smaller.

When the South African forces started withdrawing from Angola on 17 January 1976, 2 Military Area became 3 Military Area and vice versa, thus as a switch over of names.
