RE: SAS Makalani

DESERT SHIP WEIGHS ANCHOR
420 km from the nearest ocean...

MAKALANI will weigh her anchor and set her sails for Katima Mulilo shortly. She may even change her name, but the Shona sailors of Oshakati will be remembered for a long time to come.

IN January 1983 Sector 10 will say “farewell" to the South African Navy “ship" which is without doubt the furthest away from any water.

In the annual eight-month dry season in Ovambo, when even the swimming pool is not always full of water, the ship's company is not deterred from using naval terms such as "deck", “bulkhead", "galley” and "scuttles"!

Her boats are Buffels and her men are trained SAN Marines, deployed in an infantry role for the execution of tasks including the protection of the town of Oshakati and its Military Base, convoys in the Operational Area and the engineers engaged in minesweeping operations.

Comparing this ship, some 420 km from the nearest ocean, with her seagoing comrades, the Officer Commanding SAS MAKALANI, Lt Cdr G. MacDonald, says: "The manpower and equipment of SAS MAKALANI provides her with the potency and speed of a strike craft, the escort capability of a frigate and the ability of a minesweeper.

"And, of course," he adds, “SAS MAKALANI has the shallowest draught in the SAN!”
