98 Tactical Airfield Unit (98 TAU) was established at Messina in 1986, as a Citizen Force unit that has to provide logistical support for squadrons in the field. 98 TAU is controlled by Tactical Support Command and have an important role to play in the tasks of the Air Force, namely: to support the Army in counter-insurgency and in conventional operations. The TAUs are self-contained, mobile and available for duty at short notice. Their funtion is to provide airfield and camp facilities as well as administrative and logistical support. The men of the Tactical Airfield Units (TAU) were also the sappers of the SAAF when an airfield needed to be established - by extending and upgrading an existing runway, or hacking a new one out of virgin bush. (98 TAU has no known emblem)
