North West Command

Find Another UnitBrief Description
North West Command - (2 members)

North West Command [Kommandement Noordwes] was one of the regional commands, which, with the Walvis Bay Military Area, made up the Territorial Force. Based in Potchefstroom, it was responsible for the security of the region, forming the primary level of command for military operations in support of the Police. It also provided logistic, administrative and service support to units and formations operating in its area of responsibility. It had started out as the Western Transvaal Command in 1950, which then became the North Western Districs Command in 1968. It is not clear exactly when it became North West Command, but the emblems of the NW Cmd have been approved in 1972, so that date should be considered appropriate. It was closed down in 1998.
