| Witwatersrand Command - (5 members)
The founding of Witwatersrand Command (WIT Cmd) [Afr: Kommandement Witwatersrand] dates back to the Anglo-Boer War (1889-1902) when the Transvaal Volunteer Corps was formed in Johannesburg. On 11 Jul 1904 Lt-Gen Sir H.J.T. Hildyard, commander of the British forces in SA, unveiled the cornerstone of the Drill Hall which until very recently served as the HQ of the Cmd. By 1926 the Cmd formed part of Military Districts No 5 and No 6, which were combined to form the Transvaal Cmd in 1934. In 1937, the Witwatersrand Cmd was formed as an independenr command, based in the same traditional HQ building in Johannesburg. During the SADF-era the Cmd formed part of the SA Army's Territorial Force, and was responsible for the security of the region, forming the primary level of command for military operations in support of the Police. During 1988 the HQ was moved to Armadale Place, not far from the Drill Hall. In 1995, the Cmd was amalgamated with the Northern Transvaal Cmd to form the new Gauteng Cmd.
