Originally known as the Midlands Group which had formed part of the Outeniqua Command since around 1953 (which became the South-Western Districts Command in 1959), the Group 5 Headquarters [Afr: Hoofkwartier, Kommandogroep 5] was formally established in 1969 with its base at Beaufort West, under the Southern Cape Command, in Oudshoorn. Upon the closure of the Southern Cape Command in 1985, the Group 5 HQ was placed under the Western Province Command. It remained part of the WP Command until it was relocated to De Aar in 1995, only to be finally disbanded at the end of 1996.
