Originally known as the Dundee & District Group since around 1953, the Group 9 Headquarters [Afr: Hoofkwartier, Kommando-groep 9] was formally established on 11 September 1969, after the Minister of Defence approved its establishment with Chief Commandant C. W. Hardwick as Officer Commanding, the headquarters at the home of the OC. On 1 April 1971 it was reconstituted with its headquarters at Natal Command. On 11 February 1977 the group was re-established with its headquarters in the old goal premises in Richmond where the group was effectively given the responsibility for the entire length of Natal's borders with the previous homeland Transkei and Lesotho.
