Originally known as the Southern Group since around 1953, the Group 10 Headquarters [Afr: Hoofkwartier, Kommando-groep 10] was formaly established within Natal Command's base perimeter.in Durban in 1969 with the aim of controlling and co-ordinating the subordinate units under its command with respect to Area Protection. The Group 10 HQ was moved to the old Smith Street Police Station in 1982. The Group was responsible for the area from the Tugela River in the north to the Eastern Cape border in the south. During 1988 and 1989 activities were limited to operations in the townships. In 1993 liaison teams were formed to expand rear area protection. In 1994, after the premises in Smith Street became too small, Group 10 once again moved to an old convent school in Blarney Rd, Montclair and helped ensure the successful completion of the elections in the area.
