Originally known as the Pretoria Group which had formed part of the Northern Command since around 1953 (which became the Northern Transvaal Command in 1959), the Group 15 Headquarters [Afr: Hoofkwartier, Kommandogroep 15] was established in 1969 with its base at Voortrekkerhoogte, Pretoria, originally under the Northern Transvaal Command, also in Voortrekkerhoogte. The Group was also responsible for the self-governing territory of KwaNdebele. After the amalgamation of the Northern Transvaal Command into the Gauteng Command in 1995 the Group HQ fell under the command of the Gauteng Command until that command was also closed down in 1998. The Group HQ was also eventually closed down after President Mbeki announced the disbanding of the commando system on 14th February 2003.
