The Group 18 Headquarters [Afr: Hoofkwartier, Kommandogroep 18] was established in 1969 with its base at Doornkop, Johannesburg, under the Witwatersrand Command. After the amalgamation of the Witwatersrand Command into the Gauteng Command in 1995 the Group HQ fell under the command of the Gauteng Command until that command was also closed down in 1998. The Group HQ was also eventually closed down after President Mbeki announced the disbanding of the commando system on 14th February 2003.
