The Group 29 Headquarters [Afr: Hoofkwartier, Groep 29] was established in April 1986, at Ellisras in the Northern Transvaal, as part of the newly created Far North Command, under the command of Col P.H.O Stroebel. Forces in its Area of Operations were deployed west of the Waterberg range for 600 km along the international border with Botswana, with the primary aim of ensuring the stability and security of the area. With a number of military bases in the area, like Batavia, Klein Rustenburg, Swartwater, Mokerong 1 en Rooibokkraal, from which Reaction Forces operated, border companies patrolled the border on foot or by vehicle, supporting the farmers, Agricultural Unions, Civil Defence and SA Police.
