| Silvermine Military Area* - (0 members)Silvermine Military Area [Afr: Silwermyn Militêre Gebied] is an military area of less than 1000 hectares in size, located between Westlake and Noordhoek, near Simonstown in Cape Town. It is an inland Naval Base which contained the SA Navy units known as SAS Silvermine and SAS Sonneblom, where, on 8 March 1973, Prime Minister B.J. Vorster had officially opened the South African Navy's R15m Maritime Operational and Communications Headquarters, which handled all communication and emergency broadcasts from navy ships and air force aircraft in southern parts of the country. The modern Advokaat naval communications system at the base, from where the operational command and control of maritime forces was exercised, was constructed by the South African Defence Force with the help of several West German companies.
