| 16 Squadron SAAF - (1 members)16 Squadron (16 SQN) was formed at Germistonin 1939 and transferred to Walvis Bay a week later to perform maritime patrols It reappeared in 1941 at Addis Ababa, was disbanded when the Italian forces surrendered, but reformed in 1942 when 20 Squadron, taking part in the invasion of Madagascar, was renumbered. It disbanded for the third time in 1945. In 1968 the squadron was reformed at AFB Ysterplaat flying Alouette IIIs, moved to Durban a year later and In 972 the squadron moved to Bloemfontein. It used the Alouette III in the Battlefield Support/Counterinsurgency/Search and Rescue roles until it was disbanded in 1990. On 28 October 1999 the squadron was reactivated at AFB Bloemspruit to as an attack helicopter squadron, equipped with the new Rooivalk. Link me to this Unit |
