| Alberton Commando - (1 members)
The Alberton Commando [Afr: Alberton Kommando] was only formally established as a commando at Alberton, in the Transvaal, in 1964, with the HQ located in two garages at the Alberton Fire Brigade. As the town of Alberton was only proclaimed in 1909, it follows that the origins of the commando can be be traced back to sometime after 1909, as it has been recorded to have been involved in the 1922 Insurrection. The unit only really started becoming active during the riots of 1975. Its first full company served in the Operational Area in 1978. During the SADF-period it was organised under the Group 42 Headquarters at Lenz, as part of the Witwatersrand Command, and was responsible for local area protection. As an urban unit, this commando was also tasked with protecting strategic facilities as well as quelling township riots especially during the State of Emergency in the 1980s. It was disbanded with the remainder of the commandos after President Mbeki announced the disbanding of the commando system on 14th February 2003. Link me to this Unit |
