| Barberton Commando - (1 members)
The Barberton Commando can trace its origins back to as early as 1914 when its members took part in the German South West Africa campaign. After that, as with all the commando's, the commando became part of the UDF's "Skietkommandos" until at least 1961, when the terrorist threat started and escalated, particularly on the north-eastern border of the Transvaal from the early 1980s. During the SADF-period it was organised under the Group 33 Headquarters as part of the Eastern Transvaal Command and was responsible for local area protection of the area. It was disbanded with the remainder of the commandos after President Mbeki announced the disbanding of the commando system on 14th February 2003. Link me to this Unit |
