53 Battalion (53 BN) [Afr: 53 Bataljon] was formed as one of a few Modular Battalions in 1976. It was based at Ondangwa in SWA with a core of Permanent Force officers and NCOs on 2- to 4-year tours, and National Servicemen in their second year of service. Sub-units were attached according to the varying requirements, and that's why it was referred to as `modular'. 53 Battalion's main responsibility was to secure the area around Ondangwa, and had smaller bases at Okatope, Etale, Ogongo, Okalongo, and Oshigambo.

Ons onthou.

Okankolo Basis van 53 Bataljon, Sektor 10. 6SAI Echo Kompanie, 20 Mei 1981.

Ek sal die laatmiddag nooit vergeet nie, 20 Mei 1981. Ons was aangetree vir aandete 5 uur die middag, toe daar 2 troepe net met n R4 elk in die basis ingehardloop kom. Kaptein Parker het net klaar gebid. Die 2 sappers was vol stof en jy kon die angs op hulle gesigte sien. Spore waar trane teen wange afloop. Hulle is in die siekeboeg in saam Kapt Parker. Ons het bly staan voor die menasie. Die manne het geweet iets het gebeur. Ons het geweet dit was die manne van die Odilla patrollie. Niemand gaan eet nie. Na ruk kom Kapt. Parker uit siekeboeg en staan voor ons, seker sowat 80 manne wat in basis was. Hy huil. Hy sluk hard aan sy praat. Met moeite vertel hy dat Lt Steven Hansen dood is, ons eie makker, asook Lt de Villiers en sappeurs Smith en Strydom. Hulle kom nie terug nie. Ons bid weer. Niemand eet nie. Almal gaan in klaarstaan in voor sononder. Geen woord word gepraat nie. Jy staan daar in die bunkers in die walle van Okankolo. Wraak gedagtes kook in jou. Landmyne – ‘n slapgat se wapen... kom val ons eerder aan, maar SWAPO sal eerder die kans wat dat sy eie mense met ‘n bakkie daaroor ry.

Lt Steven Hansen 6SAI + seksie Infanterie en n Genie Sappeurs seksie het in die Odila aktiewe landmyn opsporing gedoen. Hulle het heeldag spore gery en dan weer terug op dieselfde spore om dan landmyne op te spoor wat in die spore geplant word. Swapo het n kasmyn met cortex verbind aan 3 x Britse Mk7 myne wat onder die buffel ontplof het. Die diesel het onder die druk ontplof en Lt Hansen, Sappers 2Lt de Villiers, JH Smith & AC Strydom, is gedood op die buffel. Paar troepe ook beseer, maar die meeste was op die grond vir beskerming vir die sappeurs. Die sappeurs het na die basis teruggehardloop deur die bosse en rapporteer dat hulle kontak gehoor het nadat hulle vertrek het. Ons het vermoed dat hulle aangeval was deur SWAPO. Dit was die ammo en kleinmors wat afgegaan het. Al die radios was ook vernietig in die ontploffing. Die Pumas het ingekom maar dit was al te donker om te land in die bosse, +- 10km van Okankolo basis. Eerstelig het ons na die toneel vertrek met die Pumas en 3 buffels. Die 2 makkers se oorskot was afgevoer na Ondangwa. Daar was baie min oor, want die buffel het die heelnag gebrand. Die middag het die buffel se wrak by Okankolo aangekom. Ek kan nog goed onthou hoe die buffel skoongemaak is en daar spierwit dele van kopbene uitgehaal is, wat toe ook na Ondangwa afgevoer was.

‘n Baie tragiese ongeluk, maar om so n kasmyn op te spoor onder sand, is byna onmoontlik. RIV makkers...
