The Soutpansberg Military Area (SMA) [Afr: Soutpansberg Militêre Gebied (SMG)] was established with its headquarters in Messina, some time after 1979, after the independence of Zimbabwe. The main purpose of the Military Area was to enable the SADF to defend the Republic along the Zimbabwe border. It initially formed part of the Northern Transvaal Command until the establishemnt of the Far North Command in 1986. The size of the area for which the SMA was responsible was approximately 4 040 square kilometres. The group's area of responsibility bordered on two international borders, those of Botswana and Zimbabwe. The length of borderline for which the group was responsible was approximately 74 kilometres shared with Botswana and approximately 225 kilometres shared with Zimbabwe.
