101 Battalion (101 BN) [Afr: 101 Bataljon] was formed in 1974 as the company-strength 1 Owambo Bn [Afr: 1 Owambobataljon]. From 1976 it expanded and was renamed to 35 Battalion [Afr: 35 Bataljon] in 1978. When the SWATF was established on 1 August 1980, the unit became 101 Battalion, one of 7 regional light infantry battalions. Platoons were known as "Romeo Mike" [Afr: Reaksie Mag] teams and handled reaction operations inside Owambo. It took part in the 1987 operations to stop FAPLA.
