9 Engineer Regiment was established in 1976 as 9 Engineer Squadron (and not 9 Field Squadron) as a Permanent Force engineer unit which formed part of the COIN units of Northwest Command at Potchefstroom. Most of the sappers were drawn from 13 Field Squadron in Welkom. The unit had various tasks within the command area before some of the troops were send to the operational area. It later became 9 Engineer Regiment.

9 Engineer Squadron, not Field Squadron, was established in 1976 as part of the Coin units of Northwest Command at Potchefstroom. I was the first OC of the unit. Most of our sappers were drawn from 13 Field Squadron in Welkom. We had various tasks within our command area before some of our troops were send to the operational area. My successor was Maj. Johan Broekman. I am unsure what happened to the unit after I left during the later part of 1979. Maj. J.W. van Staden...
