The Medical Training Command was established in 1980 and presented its first SO 3 level course that year. The first SO 2 course followed in 1981. The Medical Training Command controlled the SAMS Training Centre, the SAMS College, the SAMS Nursing College and the training functions of the military hospitals. These institutions provided all SADF-internal SAMS-specific training. The SAMS also offered under-graduate and post-graduate bursaries for medical and dental students.
