Find Another UnitBrief Description

Rietfont Area Force Unit* - (0 members)

The initial "Rietfontein Commando" (not the same as the one in the RSA) was formed as a black commando unit in November 1978 and its first fifteen members began training in January 1978. The unit was apparently formed at the request of inhabitants of the Rietfontein Block. All instructors were local white farmers and workers from the Gobabis district. At one point it was reported to be the biggest blacdk commando in South-West Africa, composed mostly of Mbanderu who are closely associated with the Herero. In june 1979 it was announced by General Geldenhuys that these commando members were used operationally, the first black commandos so deployed in SWA. In 1980 it became the Rietfont Area Force unit (Rietfont AFU), one of the local commando units within Sector 50's Area of Responsibility, which was one of the four sectors which specifically fell directly under South-West African Territory Force (SWATF) control.
