The MPLA’s October-offensive on the Central Front

After the first UNITA battalion had been trained and the already-mentioned armoured car squadron and other weapons had arrived by the middle of October 1975, Commandants Webb and Van der Waals assembled Battle Group Foxbat to counter the MPLA-threat in Central Angola.

Without prior consultation with higher command, Commandants Webb and Van der Waals investigated certain plans of attack. One of them was an advance along the Lobito-route, the capture of Sousa Lara, about 80 kilometres from the coast, followed by an northward attack on Quibala via Chila. When Brigadier Schoeman was informed about this plan, he immediately disapproved it.
