The attack on Xangongo, Part 2

Operation Protea Commandant Ferreira’s Battle Group 40 launched a two-prong attack on Xangongo (Yankee) and objective Hotel, with his Combat Team 41 attacking from the northeast, and Combat Team 42 attacking from the southeast, remaining north of Battle Group 20’s line of advance. They reached their objectives at about 12h50. Initially, the attack met with very little resistance, but ten minutes later they got pinned down close to the fort by anti-aircraft guns firing in the ground role and 122mm rocket launchers. Commandant Dippenaar’s attack on the objectives south of Xangongo (Yankee South) with Battle Group 20 started 36 minutes late, at 12h36, because not all the Battle Groups had reached their respective lines of advance in time.
