After the enemy was driven back from Luimbale on 28 October, Commandant Webb requested further instructions from Rundu. At that time Maj.-Gen. Viljoen, Brigadier Geldenhuys and Colonel Gleeson, accompanied by Colonel Harmse, were on their way to the north to discuss the situation at the front with the leaders of the FNLA and UNITA. They then decided that a combat team should firstly be sent out on the northern Santa Comba route, after which a second combat team should be sent out on the Benguela route, while Commandant Webb would himself focus on the Lobito route.
Early the morning of Wednesday 29 October, Commandant Web sent out his second-in-command, Major Holtzhausen, with a combat team to the north in order to reinforce a company of infantry deployed at that position on the front. He was accompanied by Warrant Officer J.J. Lotheringen with a 106mm recoilless gun, a mortar, two Eland-90 armoured cars, as well as two companies of UNITA infantry.
