SADF ORGANISATION

The South African Defence Force (SADF) comprised of

  • a Defence Headquarters (DHQ) in Pretoria,
  • three combat services (Army, Air Force, and Navy),
  • the SA Medical Service, and
  • supporting elements.
The SADF fell directly under the Minister of Defence, General Magnus De M. Malan, who served as Chief of the Army (1973 - 1976), Chief of the Defence Force (1976 - 1980), and became Minister of Defence in 1980.
