199897724264PR Nel J , Capt 1998/09/227 Medical Battalion Group, attached to 44 Parachute BrigadeSouth African Military Health Service 94
In 1998 Elements of the SANDF were deployed to assist the return of stability to the mountain kingdom of Lesotho after the government was overthrown, the Operation was named Boleas and it was South Africa's first peace keeping operation since 1994. Clear instructions were given to not fire unless returning fire. There was a South African civilian contingent at Khatse Dam and Sergeant Jerome Sax of 7 Medical Battalion, was part of a stick of pathfinders from 44 Parachute Brigade that was sent in 4 choppers to secure Khatse village. A Doctor from 7 Med, Captain Johan Nel was also part of the team. Jerome said to his Team mates as they went to board the choppers "Come on @#$@holes, do you want to live forever". On the 22nd of September 1998, some of the Pathfinders debussed and approached the Lesotho Defence force Military base. They were immediately fired upon and a fire fight broke out. The rest of the pathfinders were dropped by the choppers to engage the enemy, there were 24 pathfinders in total. After the fire fight Sgt Sax, who had been trained to do so, began building clearance along with the team. Two buildings had been cleared when a pathfinder stepped up to enter the third building with Sgt Sax covering him. A shot rang out killing Jerome Sax instantly. A machine gunner was called forward and about 200 rounds were emptied into the building. In the interim Captain Nel had been informed that Sax had been shot. Two pathfinders set up defensive cover whilst the Captain approached Sax. As Nel bent over to check Sax, shots were fired from inside the building. A bullet penetrated the two plates of his bullet proof jacket from the side, killing him instantly. He was awarded the South African Medical Health Services Cross posthumously for this action. RIP Sax and Nel, we shall remember, Audacissimos Servamus.
