| He was part of a four-man squad on Observation Post duties on the Kavango River where their observation post was situated on a small piece of land that formed a peninsula. During the night the river rose, cutting the peninsula off from the river bank. The river was flowing very strongly at the time and during the squad's attempt to get back to the river bank, Pietersen lost his footing and fell into the swollen river where he accidentally drowned. |
