The aims of launching an operation against the SWAPO bases were:
- To break up the SWAPO main offensive;
- To precipitate future SWAPO operations;
- To disrupt and destroy SWAPO support areas;
- To inflict the maximum number of casualties on SWAPO
The instruction given to the Sector 1Ø commander, Brigadier Badenhorst, by the General Commanding SWA Command, was simple and explicit:
“Sector 1Ø must destroy the SWAPO command and control and logistical infrastructure by capturing the complexes of SMOKESHELL, MULOLA, and CHITUMBA on 10 June 1980, and to continue with area operations for another 10 days, inflicting maximum casualties on SWAPO.”
