In 1956 the Movimento Popular de Libertação de Angola (MPLA), in 1962 the Frente Nacional de Libertação de Angola (FNLA), and in 1966 the União Nacional para Indepêndencia Total de Angola (UNITA) were created.

In 1974, the Portuguese government were ousted by a military coup and it was decided to grant the colonies their independence. In Mozambique and Guinea-Bissau the transition occurred relatively easily, but in Angola a civil war erupted between the three liberation movements, each one with the ultimate aim to seize power on 11 November 1975, when Portugal was to exit from Angola.
