Missing-in-Action Requiem

They were missing-in-action.
Their bodies were not recovered.
Their stories are not known.
Their deeds went unrecorded.

They went off on a war mission.
They were tasked to do reconnaissance.
They were tasked to bomb the enemy.
They patrolled in submarines.

No reports, no stories: missing-in-action.
Had they lived, they would speak:
"We fought the devils with our knives.
We killed them until they killed us."

"I aimed my bombs and they hit,
My plane exploded, hit by a missile."
" We sank three enemy ships and were escaping,
They depth-charged us, we are at the bottom."

Play the Pipes, and beat the drum slowly.
Dip the flag in honor of a fallen hero.
Let a tear run down your face in homage.
Salute a brave warrior, Missing-In-Action.

Vietnam Tears

I stood and I watched as a mother cried,
when she had heard that her son had died.
He didn't die because he was sick,
or he didn't die because he was in a wreck.
He died doing what he felt was right.

I watched a father try to hold back his tears,
His son had lived only a scant 19 years.
His son had died nine thousand miles away,
And what was there left for a father to say?
He got down on his knees and said a prayer,
His brave son knows his father did care.

I stood and watched as a little girl cried.
She didn't understand why her brother had passed on;
Why he never again played with her on the lawn.
Looking at the little girl's tears I knew,
That her big brother died fighting for you and me.

"Lord God I have never spoken to you
But now I want to say, "How do you do?"
You see, God, they told me You didn't exist
And like a fool I believed all this
Last night from a shell hole I saw your sky
I figured right then they had told me a lie
Had I taken time to see the things you made
I'd have known they weren't calling a spade a spade

I wonder, God, if you'll take my hand
Somehow I feel that you'll understand
Funny I had to come to this hellish place
Before I had time to see Your face
Well, I guess there isn't much more to say
But I'm sure glad, God, I met you today
I guess zero hour will soon be here
But I'm not afraid since I know you're near

The signal!

Well, God, I'll have to go
I like You lots, I want you to know
Look now this will be a horrible fight
Who knows, I may come to Your house tonight
Though I wasn't friendly to You before
I wonder, God, if You'd wait at Your door

Look, I'm crying, I'm shedding tears

I'll have to go now God goodbye
Strange now, since I met You, I'm not afraid to die"

Written by a soldier from a shell hole in the Vietnam war

66364316PMBrinkworth A.H.Capt1978/08/0324 Squadron SAAFAircraft Accident; Missing: Death Presumed - Reported Missing when his Buccaneer SMk.50, Serial No. 423, flown by Captain Dries Marais suffered a double flame-out and crashed into the sea 28 miles off Green Point near Scottburgh and exploded on impact with the water. The aircraft was flying in a formation of three Buccaneers for a night attack on a Naval Strike Craft that was towing a LARNE-splash target off the coast of Scottburgh, Natal and the attack started well. Under the light of a NATAC flare that burned for almost 4-minutes, each Buccaneer could re-attack the splash target towed at some 15-knots and shoot rockets or drop bombs on the moving target - something only the Buccaneers ever did. At the end of the attack, Captain Dries Marias called in and said that he had a flame out in one engine and was diverting to Durban International Airport. Not long after, he called in a second engine failure and the formation saw the flames of the two rocket ejection seats as they ejected from Buccaneer 423. Captain Dries Marias was rescued from the sea and where he confirmed that they had not transferred the bomb door fuel to the main fuel tank. Captain Brinkworth's parachute and harness were found floating in the water and they had been undone, indicating a safe and conscious landing in the sea he was never found and the search was called off after two days. Captain Brinkworth has no known grave and remains unaccounted for. For administrative purposes, he was officially declared dead on 14 August 1979

Just south of Ongiva, English Electric Canberra, Serial No. 452 that was flying No.2 in the formation, was struck in the cockpit area by hostile small-arms fire. Doyle was the Navigator of 452. The No 3 heard the Pilot scream and noticed that Canberra 452 started behaving erratically. No 3 moved alongside and saw the Pilot of 452 slumped over the controls. It appeared that the Navigator attempted to fly the aircraft from the Navigators position as the aircraft started to turn West. The aircraft continued flying for about 12 minutes with bomb bay doors still open before it suddenly entered a very steep climb, rolled over into a steep dive until it hit the ground, exploding on impact. Both crew members have no known grave

When their patrol crossed a gravel road in the kill zone of a vehicle ambush, they walked into a large PLAN force that were dug in with mortars and machine guns and were able to inflict casualties and pin down the patrol. 2/Lieutenant van der Walt was killed instantly after being shot multiple times by a Soviet PKM machine gun. Staff Sergeant Braz immediately went to his aid and was hit multiple times by the same dug in PKM machine gun. He was was still alive when the casevac arrived but succumbed to his wounds a short while later. Rifleman Joao was critically wounded in the initial exchange of fire. Reinforcements dislodged the ambushing force, but were forced to secure the immediate area and attend to casualties rather than pursue the enemy. Joao withdrew and attempted to return to nearby TB, but became lost and died of wounds (according to intercepts and evidence supported by his badly damaged equipment). Despite extensive efforts to find him, he was not recovered.

Steven successfully ejected and after landing, waved to his Wingman Lieutenant Chris Skinner from the ground. It appears however that while trying to evade capture, he accidentally walked into a PLAN base and was shot and killed. An intercept of PLAN radio messages indicated that he had been killed but there was no confirmation. Sometime later, propaganda pamphlets were found by SADF Forces showing photographs of Steven's body lying next to his flying helmet thereby confirming his death

79517090BGFidler B.A. HC (Posthumous)Cpl1985/09/157 Medical Battalion Group; 1 Parachute BattalionKilled In Action; Remains Repatriated - During the Angolan Bush War a member of 7 Med was killed in action. Corporal Bruce Andrew Fidler, an operational medical support operator of 7 Med Bn Gp with Special Forces training, was killed in action in Angola on 15 September 1985. The details are sketchy but it is understood that Corporal Fidler supported a "clandestine" unit of the SADF most probably 1 Parachute Battalion, tasked to train UNITA. His unit was ambushed and he was subsequently captured and interrogated. Cpl Fidler was executed by the enemy after brutal interrogation. He never revealed the location of his nearby unit in spite of brutal interrogation at the hands of his captors enabling them (a 7 Med Bn Gp, surgical team of 5 to 10 doctors) to escape and evade capture. His remains were repatriated to South Africa 10 years later on 15 September 1992 and cremated precisely 10 years after his death. Corporal Fidler was posthumously awarded the Honoris Crux for his actions of bravery. Cpl Fidler's name appears on the roll of honour of both 1 Parachute Battalion and 7 Medical Battalion Group.
