In August 1983 a fierce battle was taking place around the Cangamba airfield in Angola. UNITA were fighting the MPLA to take control of the strategic airfield. The UNITA Leader approached the SA Government for assistance. It was decided that the SADF would supply advisers to the UNITA ground force to help with the planning and execution of the attacks. The fighting carried on for nine days and reached a stage where UNITA controlled the entire area except for a bunker complex measuring 100 by 100 metres that was still in MPLA hands.
