Accompanied by an unknown number of armoured cars, Battle Group Alpha followed a two-tracked path to arrive at S Christovão, about 20 kilometres further. From here they followed a secondary road to Benguala, up to where it joined the main road about 31 kilometers from Catengue.

They were just in time for an Eland 90 to shoot out an ammunition truck that was on its way from the battle at Catengue to Benguela. A number of other vehicles on the road to Catengue also ran into Battle Group Alpha. From what could later be derived from MPLA bulletins, it had been Cuban instructors on their way to Catengue to support the FAPLA defences with artillery. A number of Cubans and MPLA-members were killed here throughout the day. Some fled. Some vehicles just stopped and its occupants fled into the bush. Seven enemy vehicles were destroyed and a number captured undamaged. Three of the bodies were identified as Cubans.
