The Buffel is the standard mine-protected armoured personnel carrier of the SADF infantry units. It has a V-shaped hull which deflects the blast and shrapnel of an exploding mine it detonates while driving over. Ten men are accommodated in the open-topped infantry compartment and all the seats are fitted with full harnesses to prevent the men from being thrown out by the blast. The driver are also belted in safely in the drivers compartment. A 7.62mm machine-gun can be mounted on the hull. It is powered by a 93.25 kW diesel engine, which provides for a road speed of 96 km/h and it has a range of 1,000 kilometres. The vehicle weights 6.14 tons. It is the ideal vehicle to carry up to a full combat-ready section of troops into battle. |
