MPLA endeavours

Operation SavannahIn contrast with the lot of the FNLA, the MPLA’s support showed a continued increase during the first half of the year. During his arrival in Luanda on their historical day of 2 February, Dr. Agostinho Neto was cheered by a large crowd of between 300 000 to 400 000. The number is misleading because in reality the FNLA still had control over the city at that stage. Neto’s standing was further deteriorated after the Chipenda faction finally broke away from him. By March 1975 it was still reported: “The Neto faction of the MPLA is losing support.” This was the case mostly in the rural areas where many MPLA supporters returned from Zambia to find that no provision was made for housing and schools.
