About The War In Angola

Cuba

With regards to the involvement of Cuba in the civil war of Angola, the following questions arise: why, when, and how much?

For a country with almost 10 million people and a limited and vulnerable economy, Cuba attempted surprisingly extensive foreign activities. Shortly after the Castro-brothers, Fidel and Raul, Ernesto (Ché) Guevara and their spiritual partners brought the Batista government down in 1959, they were convinced that it was their calling to support other revolutions, wherever it may occur, or threaten to occur. Especially Ché Guevara, Argentine by birth, but a fiery propagandist for his adopted country and a convinced communist, was involved in this. Cuba therefore interfered in revolutionary movements in Panama, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Peru, Colombia, Brazil, Venezuela and Bolivia, mostly with very little success. (C.F. Nieuwoudt, “Kuba in Africa”, Bulletin of the African Institute, No. 2, 1978, p. 45)
