At the end of August 1981 the armed forces of South Africa was conducted in the southern regions of Angola called "Operation Protea". Mechanized South Africans stopped the border of Angola and with massive air support, rushed to the three main reference points of the government army (MPLA) in the province: small towns Ondzhive, Shangongo and Kaam. Only formed with the help of Soviet military Angolan army fiercely resisted.Ondzhivu defended the 11th Infantry Brigade of the government troops, which worked nine Soviet military advisers and specialists, and the city were five Soviet women - wives of officers and warrant officers who are "discharged" from the Union, not knowing that far in the Angolan province of Cunene suddenly turn into a real hell.In the town Shangongo, which was defended by 19 Infantry Brigade FAPLA, fifteen were Soviet citizens, including five women and three children. And Kaam at the 2nd mechanized infantry brigade worked six Soviet officers, half of whom had families with them. The hardest part had to be our advisors for the 11th Brigade. Town of South African mechanized Ondzhiva took the tongs, and then surrounded. It was there on 27 August and killed our citizens: I. Vazhnik, EV Kireev, J. and L. Kireeva Pestretzoff. Survivors of advisors, specialists and military interpreters and their family members had fought in getting out of Ondzhivy, Shangongo and Kaam. Many were injured.
