The Light Horse Regiment (LHR), formerly the Imperial Light Horse, was raised on the authority of the War Office (London) on September 21, 1899, from Uitlander refugees in Natal, a long history brought with it With the institution of the Republic and the break from the Commonwealth the name was to the Light Horse Regiment.
