Chief of the Army - (8 members)
In 1966 the General Staff of the SADF had been replaced by a Supreme Command comprising of the Commandant General, Commander Maritime Defence and Chief of the Navy, GOC Joint Combat Forces, Chief of Staff Army, and Chief of Staff Air Force. The originl post of Chief of Staff Army was altered to Chief of the Army [Afr: Hoof van die Leër] in 1968 due to the rapid expansion of the Defence Force which had made further organizational changes necessary. The post of Chief of the Army was upgraded at the same time and provided with its own Chiefs of Army Staff for administrative purposes. The Chief of the Army was responsible for the command and control of all Permananet Force and Citizen Force units of the South African Army, which was the land-based combat service of the SADF.
