1 Locating Regiment - (4 members)

1 Locating Regiment [Afr: 1 Opsporingsregiment] was established on 1 March 1950 as 1 Locating Battery with its Headquarters at Stellenbosch. It became 1 Opsporingsbattery, a purely Afrikaans-speaking unit, on 1 January 1960, and enlarged to a regiment as 1 Locating Regiment on 1 August 1975. The Headquarters was first situated in the Engineers Building of the Stellenbosch University, but was moved later to Jan Cilliers Street. The right of freedom to the town of Stellenbosch was awarded in 1975 and it received its colours from the then State President, Dr N.J. Diedericks, in 1978. The unit was converted from a locating to a medium gunner role, and was redesignated Regiment Simonsberg on 1 February 1990.

RE: 1 Locating Regiment

This Gunner Regiment was established on 1 March 1950 with Headquarters at Stellenbosch as 1 Locating Battery, South African Artillery, becoming 1 Locating Battery, S.A.A. on 1 January 1954, and 1 Opsporingsbattery, a purely Afrikaans-speaking unit, on 1 January 1960.
It was enlarged to a regiment as 1 Locating Regiment on 1 August 1975, being allocated to 8 S.A. Armoured Division.
The Freedom of Stellenbosch was awarded to the Unit on 18 October 1975 and the Unit was presented with a Regimental Colour by the State President at Stellenbosch on 4 March 1978.
The Unit was converted from a locating to a medium gunner role, and was redesignated Regiment Simonsberg on 1 February 1990.
Its Motto remains PETE ET DELE : Find and Destroy
Major T.J. Bezuidenhout, a former commanding officer is their Honorary Colonel.

REGIMENT SIMONSBERG

ORIGIN AND HSTORY

The unit was established on 27 January 1950 as a location battery. In October 1975 Regimental status was awarded to the unit. In 1990 the unit was changed to Regiment Simonsberg with a new role as a 155 mm RL Medium Artillery Regiment. The Headquarters was first seated in the engineers building of the Stellenbosch University but was moved several times. Today the Headquarters is situated at Jan Cilliers Street. The right of freedom to the town of Stellenbosch was awarded on 18 October 1975 and the unit received its Colour on 4 March 1978, from the State President, his honorary Dr N.J. Diedericks.

BATTLE HONOURS AND DECORATIONS

During a border camp in 1976. n members of the unit measured the well known "Cut­-line" and charted various buildings and installations in Ovamboland. For his share in the making of the "Cut-line" Bdr (Later WO 2) E.J. Grobbelaar received the Chief of the SADF's Commendation medal. The unit regularly attended camps at Potchefstroom and Lohathla.

UNIT EMBLEM

In blue a square of red with over it an eagle with a flash of lightning in the right claw and a grenade in the left claw, all in gold. On the chest a Roman letter I in red.
