Operation Protea: Rationale

Operation Protea It is August 1981, thirty years ago…

SWAP0’s 3 areas of operation in Southern Angola were divided into the western, central and eastern regions, each with a HQ to coordinate operations in these areas.

In the eastern region SWAPO forces were fairly independent as far as their logistical supply was concerned, and little use was made of the FAPLA logistical system. It was also in this area that FAPLA forces had heeded Security Forces warnings not to interfere in the fight against SWAPO.
