About The War In Angola

Aims of the SADF after 11 November 1975

On 12 November 1975, Minister P.W. Botha, Admiral H.H. Biermann and Lieutenant.-Generals M.A. de M. Malan and R.H.D. Rogers considered the situation. On this occasion two assessments of the military situation had been done before the meeting. The first was an unsigned military assessment titled “Debate of future alternatives for Operation Savannah as the situation developed before 11 November 1975.” (Can be found in the SADF Archives) The second was titled “Op Savannah: Notes for planning and conferences”, signed by Brigadier J.J. Geldenhuys and dated 12 November 1975. This document was prepared by Army Headquarters and was discussed at a high level meeting two days later, on 14 November 1975, in the presence of the Prime Minister. (SADF Archives)
