The South African Army has a Senior Military Staff Orchestra, Chamber orchestra and an entertainment group. These three groups are stationed at Voortrekkerhoogte. There are also staff orchestras in Cape Town and Johannesburg. The military orchestras give inter- and extramural performances at concerts, where they play classical, light and military music. The orchestras also give performances during diplomatic functions, taptoos and tours.
Applicants should pass a musical audition, be able to sight-read a piece of music and complete certain tests of skill.
Members of the SA Army Band must first complete their basic training. Thereafter they can do various courses and receive in-service training in subjects such as Harmony and Hearing Development.
Basic training for all musicians was done at the Army Services School [Afr: Diensvakskool] up to 1980 and then by the Personnel Services School [Afr: Personeeldiensskool].
