About The War In Angola

Operation Sceptic: The confrontation at Mongua

Operation Sceptic At 13h00 on 29 June 1980 Commandant Dippenaar received an urgent request from Battle Group 1Ø for a recovery element to help recover some captured vehicles. Because there were no threat perceived, the available anti-tank troop (only three 90mm Ratels) and the recovery Ratel of Battle Group 61 were tasked to move to Mongua to assist them.

Comandant Serfontein had been confident that there was no immediate FAPLA/PLAN threat to Battle Group 1Ø on its way to Mongua. There they would meet up with the team from Battle Group 61, who, by then, would have secured the village, ready to act as guides. Together they would move down to Cuamato where they would combine forces with Battle Group 61 for the move southwards until they crossed the Cutline at Beacon 10.
