About The War In Angola

Offensive on the Lobito route resumed

Since “Dinky Toy” started its reconnaissance flights on 26 October 1975, Battle Group Foxbat had been better informed about the movements of the enemy. These flights, however, were not without danger as it drew enemy fire quite often. Radio Luanda announced the presence of the plane as a new phase of the war. This was despite the fact that FAPLA, as described before, already had a reconnaissance plane in the air at the first battle of Norton de Matos (Balombo).

Informed about the presence of enemy positions at Norton de Matos, Commandant Webb again moved out on the Lobito route on 29 October. By that afternoon they had covered the 130 kilometres from Teixeira da Silva (Bailundu) and had Norton de Matos in sight. The battle group was once again in the same terrain as during the first battle three weeks before. And again the enemy was waited for them in front of the town, their guns pointing down the road.
