Operation Askari: Situation

Operation Askari The SWAPO insurgency, usually commenced in late January of every new year and continued until the end of April, or early May, when the water started to dry up. PLAN would use the dry season to prepare for the forthcoming infiltration, and they commonly referred to this period as “rehearsals”, during which they would withdraw northwards into Angola to positions near FAPLA bases where they could utilise their supply lines and enjoy the relative safety provided by the proximity of these bases and the local population.
