About The War In Angola

Protection of the flanks

Colonel Swart had been aware that both his left and right flanks could be threatened during his attack on Quibala via Bridge 14. He therefore took measures to protect both flanks. Combat Team Kilo, under the command of Lieutenant Tony Steynberg and Staff-Sergeant N. Fougstedt, was sent out in an easterly direction on D-Day, Monday 8 December 1975. The combat team comprised of just less than a company of UNITA infantry, an armoured car troop, and anti-aircraft guns, all of which had initially been held in reserve at Cela, before being moved to the north.
